SDI Team wins IoT Challenge!

The team of the SDI community (David Kießling, Christopher Renner, Wolfgang Brückner, Thomas Stadelmayer) has won the IoT Challenge as part of the Nuremberg Web Week with its smart feeding bowl called PetFit. It gives automatically the right amount of food to the pet according to its energy consumption during the day. To do so the pet gets a fitness collar that determines its energy consumption. With this creative idea and a very lively and entertaining presentation the SDI community team was able to prevail over three other very good teams. As price every team member got a Raspberry Pi 3 set and an invitation to the Software Engineering Camp 2017.

The following picture shows the experimental setup during the award ceremony. Unfortunately we were not able to bring a real cat, but obviously also our very cute soft toy cat melted the hearts of all those present, inclusive the ones of the judges (also they stated that the cuteness factor was not taken into account ;-) )

Fikat Day Part 1

Many members of the SDI community are computer scientists and not familiar with soldering and working directly on the hardware. They are afraid of touching circuit boards, because they don’t want to destroy anything. But as it is one important goal of the SDI community lab to bring the different fields of studies closer together we organized a so called Fikat Day. Andreas Rom from Siemens AG gave a small theoretical introduction to soldering itself, the hardware of the Fikat board and that there is a small mistake on it that we should repair by our own during the day. After a small soldering exercise we started to fix the Fikat board.

After this we tested the boards for functionality and. if they worked propably, signed it as checked. Overall we checked about 120 boards. For many of the SDI members it was a very interesting event and the fear of touching and destroying circuit boards decreased a lot.

The Siemens AG left 15 Fikat boards at our Community Lab for free usage. Thank you very much! So if you are intrested in working and trying the Fikat board you are highly welcome to visit the Community Lab. In near future a second event is planned that concentrates on the software and programming of the device. This second event will as always be an open event and of course announced at our homepage.

IoT Challenge Night-Session

Doing a night-session to finish the project and prepare the presentation. Final day is thursday 18th of May. The closing event and award ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. in the tentoria at the technical faculty of FAU.

We design a smart feeding bowl for pets. It analyses the activity of the cat and provides the appropriated amount of food according to its energy consumption during the day. This helps the cat to stay fit!

First prototype is already running:

Information Day for Schools Report

On March 16 the SDI Community Lab opened its doors for interested students of secundary school. The aim of this event was to awake interest in computer science and engineering in general. In the beginning Steffen explained what the elementary part of a processor is and how to connect these to get a simple adder. He visualised his explanation by drawing a schematic using transistors connected to an AND- and an OR-gate on the whiteboard.

Before showing a practical demonstration, Christian gave a little talk about the theory of image processing and automotive driving. He roughly explained how to detect edges and circles in an image and pointed out that different image processing algorithms have different requirements for processing power and memory. Therefore he followed that using the right computer architecture for a specific algorithm has huge impact on the efficency and performance. Afterwards Daniel showed a smart camera installed on a drone and demonstrated live the detection of circles. This can e.g. be used for automatic flying.

At the end, Steffen showed the Fikat-Board and the software defined control of a electric propeller. After the presentation the students were welcome to ask questions and have a talk to all present members of the SDI community lab.

We are glad that so many students participated and also showed a large interest in the projects at the SDI Community Lab. Some of them even stayed to have a small conversation afterwards.
